dance from 1969 - now

Does this website need to be moderated due to large number of non-authentic new members?

I've just counted the number of new "members" - 74 in the last 2 days or so  that are probably commercial non-dance enthusiasts posing as legitimate members. A fair few seem to be about drugs/pharmaceuticals. This suggests that the network is in urgent need of being moderated.

It is possible to require members to use their real names. I think this would make sense. A moderator can then make some evaluation as to whether they are legitimate individuals.  If this is not done I think there are likely to be problems.

Many new members appear to have no connection with LCDS, or The Place or even dance. I think they are robot-generated (may be called spam bots?). It is possible that the Ning network allows this kind of "advertising". I think it is unwise to click on any member unless they have a clearly identifiable first name and surname. I'm guessing that many of the members with a single name are just advert spam bots. Whether there is any risk on clicking on theem, I don't know. I started to read the 'Privacy' and 'Terms of Service' but it is offputting as it's so detailed.  Whoever is webmaster (if there is such a thing on this network), it would be great if they would post something about this whole issue.

Please consider this issue, and anyone with any expertise in computer networks - please contribute to this discussion.

An unmoderated website/ forum is likely to become full of non-dance content.

I agree with you about the spam tsunami. It's a big turn-off (!) to come on to this website and find all this 'pharmaceutical' rubbish, and judging by the problems university websites had a few years ago, it can only get worse unless and until the system is purged - not just moderated. Also (speaking for miself) it makes it more or less impossible for this website to achieve its original purpose. I'm going to send a copy of this to the 'report an issue' button....

This network has come under automated attack creating new users with fake identities. We're taking steps to stop this, and have informed Ning (the parent network) of the attack on their system.

Hopefully this can be resolved quickly -- and in the meantime, we have been reassured that the personal details of genuine members remain secure.
That's reassuring. The fake members seem to have been removed for the time being, but it may be necessary to keep a watchful eye.

Unfortunately, it seems that the network will need constant monitoring and purging/ cleansing of these new users with fake identities. After the removal of a large number, some more.have appeared.

There's another wave of fake members that have been added. I hope someone can remove them as they are a nuisance.
