dance from 1969 - now

Can you remember the first time? Since September 1969 there have been somewhere in the region of 5,000 performances in The Place's theatre. Most have been contemporary dance in any of its many forms, though there have also been plays, music, stand-up comedy, opera and much more besides.

Let us know the about the first performance you remember seeing at The Place

The first show I ever saw at The Place was the co-production with Unicorn Theatre of The Red Shoes in September 2001. I had started working at The Place a few months earlier, and this was the first performance in the newly refurbished building. It had been a struggle to complete the building work on time -- when we reopened the theatre and the toilets were finished, but little else was.

When I arrived at the theatre for the show from our temporary offices down the road I noticed something missing: I hurried back to the offices to print out a couple of bits of A4 paper to stick on the door. One said "The Place" and the other, tongue in cheek, said "Grand Reopening".
The first performance I saw at The Place was during Resolution! 2007 I wasn't really sure what to expect and when I left I still wasn't sure what to make of all of the pieces but I guess that sums up Resolution! it gave me something to think about anyway.
The first show I ever saw at The Place was in December, 1991. It was a large-scale community dance piece choreographed by Royston Maldoom, inspired largely by Gustav Holst's The Planets. It was the first time I had ever seen community dance and I was really touched by a great performance given by Camden schoolchildren who seemed to range in age from 7 - 16.

What also impressed me was how much support there was for the performers - the show was sold out. The friend who took me to the show commented "It's really great, people who don't normally come to see dance are in the building seeing their kids perform. Who knows, maybe next time they'll be inspired to come again ...".
