early days of experimental dance?

I wonder if there's anybody out there who has any memories (or photos or programmes or reviews or personal diary jottings...) of experimental dance pieces from around 40 years ago (say, over 10 years, starting just before The Place opened, perhaps 1966 to 1976)? I already put up on this site a few photos of 2 of my own pieces, and there's more where that came from but there must be lots more elsewhere, eg Geoff Moore 'Moving Being' etc.Lancaster University (with which I've been associated for…See More

Thanks for responding. I looked at your paintings on the website and I like them a lot. Your observations about 'riding the line between figurative and abstraction', 'slippage between past and present' strike a chord with me. I'm intensely interested these days in how so much of our life (not just personal/private, public/political also) is kinda haunted.
My idea for 'discussion' goes like this. The Place website says this strand we are on is intended as an opportunity to 'crowd-source a social history of dance'; I bumped into Kenneth Tharp in September and he said 'Alan get yourself online, put up some pics, and let's see what we can generate about those early days of LSCD/LCDT/Place etc'. So I made a little contribution - but I see no crowd (-sourcing)... I wondered if there might be some interest in sharing thoughts on what counted as 'experimental' in dance 40 years or so ago. Like you I still think it was groundbreaking and fresh, but does it deserve a bit more debate and especially documentation? What's in the archives....??
I'm semi-retired now, with a Research Fellowship at Lancaster University, and trying to write about arts and mental health.
Great to hear from you.
PS here's a pic of Xenia and me, from the VERY first LCDT appearance in 1966.
Not very experimental but a really authentic start....

Hi Alan,

How lovely to get your message! Yes, 40 years is a long time ago isn't it? But so much has come out of the Place and so many friendships as well. You probably know that I retired as Artistic Director of Candoco 2 years ago, and am now Patron which is lovely. The company are still doing very well and I'm very proud of the 2 new Co-Artistic Directors who are now in the driving seat.

I miss the daily interaction with the dancers and staff but am loving spending more time with my husband. Hope to see you at one of the events celebrating 40 years of the Place. Are you in the US or UK? I love the photos and noticed Robin's reflection in the mirror on one of them.
best wishes Celeste
