The Place

Robert Cohan and Mop Eager in conversation

As The Place prepared for its 40th birthday celebrations in May, we invited Robert Cohan, the founding artistic director of The Place and Janet 'Mop' Eager, who was the company's original administrator, to film an interview with Kenneth Tharp, The Place's Chief Executive.

In this extract, Bob and Mop recall how Robin Howard, inspired by Martha Graham, founded a dance organisation and involved them in the search for its permanent home - a disused former drill hall in Euston which would become The Place (recorded 31 March 2010)

I loved that , it was such a modest beginning but even after all these years these greats Mr Cohan, Janet Eager, Richard Alston , Siobhan Davies are still to me ... modest about what they have done. BRAVO !!

I found this very moving. How wonderful to hear some of the story of the foundation of The Place, and how it all came about. There is something remarkable about the way that a particular set of circumstances brought into being a building that became the home of so much creativity. I look forward to reading Bob Cohan's autobiography.
